Shaka Zulu is an epic 1986 movie about the life of the enigmatic Zulu king who ruled southeastern Africa from 1816-1828. Shaka (Henry Cele) was born illegitimate in 1787 to Nandi (Dudu Mkhize) and Zulu chieftan Senzanakhona (Conrad Magwaza). Shaka's birth and life is shown to be guided by a witch doctor's prophecy and black magic. After first denying Shaka as his son, Senzanakhona is forced by Nandi's tribe to accept both mother and son. This perceived humiliation causes Shaka and his mother to live under years of abuse by Senzanakhona and the Zulu people. After escaping and living under the protection of several other tribes, Shaka grows into a strong young warrior, who vows to be king of the Zulu people. With the help of King Dingiswayo and the Mtetwa Paramountcy, Shaka takes the Zulu crown after his father's death. Terrified that the Cape will be attacked by Shaka's tribe, Lord Charles Somerset (Trevor Howard) enlists the help of Lt. Francis Farewell (Edward Fox) to make contact with Shaka. The British tactics don't go exactly as planned as Shaka is shown to much more formidable than they ever imagined.moreless
