Onboard this train trip is Shanghai Lily (Marlene Dietrich), who is a famous courtesan or "coaster", a woman who lives by her wits. Later the train is also taken over by rebels lead by Henry Chang (Warner Oland). Chang needs an important passenger to exchange for his captured aide. Chang also forcibly tries to have Shanghai Lily sent to his chambers but she refuses. He instead takes fellow courtesan onboard Hui Fei (Anna May Wong).
