Shanghai Triad is a crime drama from China covering the seven-day ordeal of an innocent boy from the countryside. The film opens with Uncle Liu (Xuejian Li) greeting his teenage nephew, Tang Shuisheng (Wang Xiaoxiao), at the Shanghai marina. Liu works for his cousin, Mob boss Tang (Li Baotian), who sent for Shuisheng to serve his mistress Xiao Jingbao (Gong Li). Rival mob chief Fat Yu (Jiang Liu) sends his men to the marina to sell his opium to Tang. Before leaving for his new job, Shuisheng witnesses Tang's men steal Yu's opium without paying. When Shuisheng arrives at Tang's mansion, he meets Xiao for the first time. She is rude to him and humiliates his countryside upbringing. He meets also Tang's right-hand-man Song (Sun Chun) and discovers a possible affair between Song and Tang's beautiful mistress. Fat Yu sends his men to Tang's home to retaliate for the blown drug deal, Uncle Liu dies and everyone retreats to a nearby island to hide. Xiao makes friends with Cuihau (Jiang Baoying) and Shuisheng shows interest in Cuihau's daughter, Ajiao (Yang Qiangua). Tang discovers the affair, kills Song and offers Xiao one wish before killing her. She asks Tang to spare her two new friends, but the ruthless Tang tells her that Cuihau is already dead and Aijao will soon take her place as his mistress.
