Shelter is a 2003 drama that tells the story of three teenagers living in one of Brooklyn's grittiest neighborhoods. Ray (Ray Santiago) is caregiver to his infirm mother, to his brother, Spider (John Rafael Peralta), and to Maria (Marilyn Soto Santiago), who doesn't let her pregnancy be a deterrent to her drug use. The death of his mother confirms Ray's resolve to escape the urban squalor. Ray, Spider and Maria steal a car and set off for points unknown, driving through the night. In the morning, they find themselves in an isolated beach house on a secluded, pristine beach that, to their weary inner-city eyes, appears enchanted. Despite their limited knowledge of family dynamics, the trio tries to establish their own little family and spend the remaining weeks of summer together. As Maria's due date nears, this makeshift family becomes more dysfunctional, as resentment and jealousy form a dark cloud over this idyllic setting. Shelter is directed by Benno Schoberth.
