Shine is a 1996 Australian film that tells the story of the life of pianist David Helfgott who was institutionalized after suffering a severe mental breakdown. Young David (Alex Rafalowicz) is taught piano by his tyrannical father Peter, who accepts nothing less than the best from David. Teenage David (Noah Taylor) wins the state musical championship and is invited to America to study piano. Peter forbids his son from leaving, and in turn David accepts a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London, England. David chooses to play Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto in a competition and successfully wins, but suffers a mental breakdown. He then receives electro-shock therapy when he is admitted into a psychiatric hospital. David returns to Australia but finds that his father won't see him, and so he again suffers a mental breakdown. As David pieces his life together, he encounters various good Samaritans who attempt to help him revive his musical career.
