Short Eyes is a 1977 prison drama about a middle-class pedophile experiencing jailhouse justice based on the award-winning play by Miguel Pi''ero. Clark Davis (Bruce Davison) gets sent to "The Tombs," the Manhattan House of Detention, while he awaits trial for raping a young girl. In this world, white men are the minority and child rapists are considered the lowest form of humanity. While the other prisoners take their disgust out on Davis, only one older inmate, Juan (Jos'' P''rez) treats him with anything close to compassion. Davis admits to Juan that he had abused several children but not the girl in his accusation. When Juan realizes that Davis will likely walk because of a weak police case, he faces the dilemma of knowing Davis will continue to hurt other children, even if he is innocent in the one case. Director Robert M. Young uses a cast of real-life criminals, junkies and murderers in supporting roles to add authenticity to this intense, emotional drama.moreless

Fans of prison flicks would do better to catch the HBO series "Oz" or the five millionth rebroadcast of "The Shawshank Redemption."
