Show Me Love is a Swedish film released in 1998, the directorial debut of Lukas Moodysson. Agnes is a quiet girl with very few friends. She has a huge crush on Elin, one of the most popular girls in school, who is completely unsatisfied with her life. On Agnes’ 16th birthday, her mother decides to throw her a party. The only person who shows up is Viktoria, the girl in a wheelchair. Later, during dinner, Elin shows up with her sister, trying to avoid going to another party. Elin’s sister has heard that Agnes is a lesbian, and dares Elin to kiss her. She does, and the two run out of the house. After getting drunk at the other party, Elin ends up back at Agnes’ house apologizing to her. The two talk, and Elin realizes she is attracted to Agnes. On the BFI list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 14, Show Me Love captures the intense pain and elation of teenage relationships. It was incredibly possible in its native Sweden, and found success in the American art house circuit.moreless
