Movie Summary

Director:
Christian Taylor
Released:
2004
Rating:
TV-MA
This witty mockumentary follows Christian Taylor as he works his way through the ranks trying to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a Las Vegas Showboy. Taylor is working as a writer on the HBO TV series "Six Feet Under" when a British film crew decides to do a story on his life. Unbeknownst to Christian, the crew overhears, through his still-attached mic, that he's being fired from his job. He takes this opportunity to live out his dream of becoming a Vegas dancer despite the glaring odds-namely his blatant lack of talent-and the cameras are there to capture every entertaining moment. This hilarious comedy features cameos from Whoopi Goldberg, Siegfried and Roy and cast members of "Six Feet Under."

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

The result is a deliberate conflation of fact and fiction that yields unexpected emotional impact.

  • 50

The New York Times Stephen Holden

The lesson of Showboy is how disturbingly easy it is for an audience to trust what it sees when confronted with a film posing as factual documentary.

  • 50

    Variety Scott Foundas

It's a rich idea for a comedy, even if the filmmakers seem timid about making the pic the full-on satire it might have been.
