Side Streets is a movie about fear, relationships, careers, dreams and more. The story takes place in a 24 hour period. On one of the hottest days of the year, Bipin Raj (Art Malik), a cab driver in Staten Island, picks up a passenger who he thinks is a movie star. He tells her his brother, Vikram Raj (Shashi Kapoor), is a very well-known Bollywood mega-star with millions of fans and is currently living with him and his family. The excitement of having a movie star in the house has worn out for Mrs. Chandra Bipin Raj (Shabana Azmi). Now there is friction because the formally handsome Vikram Raj is now an alcoholic, grossly overweight, macho and lazy. Despite his negative changes, Vikram Raj still has faithful fans that come to the familiy's home to see him and dance to his film's songs and tunes. This thrills Vikram Raj but annoys Mrs. Chandra Bipin Raj. The others stories told in this movie involve a dress-designer facing eviction; a drug-dealer working at a meat-shop who dreams of moving to the suburbs; and a beauty queen's slacker husband. Although these people live in five different boroughs of New York City, their lives interconnect. This movie reveals the struggles and joys of urban life.moreless
