Movie Summary

Director:
Alexander Payne
Released:
2005
Rating:
R

Sideways is about two forty-something year old men, Miles Raymond and Jack Cole, who take a week-long road trip to the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Miles is a divorcee, unpublished author, wineaficionado, and middle school English teacher. Jack is Miles' old college roommate, a now soon-to-be-married actor. Miles wants to indulge in wine and fine food, as well as play some nice, relaxed golf, but Jack is more interested in finding one last fling. But when the two both meet women, Miles gets some bad news from his agent, and Jack gets into trouble with another woman's husband, and things get kind of crazy. Between getting ridiculously drunk and hunting down missing wedding bands, the two men have their hands full.

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Exactly written, directed with a surgeon's precision and transcendently acted, Sideways brings emotional reality to a consistently amusing character comedy, making it something to ...

  • 90

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

Like the film itself, the performance (Giamatti's) is deeply controlled, played with restraint and with microscopic attention to detail.

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A beautifully observed, small-scale study of personal foibles, romantic uncertainty and two sides of the sadly predictable male animal.
