Signs of Life is a 1989 drama, also known by the title One for Sorrow, Two for Joy. In a small town in Maine, the residents know that every action can affect the entire town. When a boating company shuts down, most of the residents lose their jobs, meaning that everybody will have to drastically reconsider their life plans. The owner of the company, elderly Owen Coughlin (Arthur Kennedy), has been building ships for most of his life, and the loss of his livelihood and his passion weighs heavily on him. For John (Beau Bridges), the closing of the company could not have come at a worse time. His wife Mary (Kathy Bates) is expecting their fifth child. Daryl (Vincent D'Onofrio) has to face the difficulty of taking care of his mentally handicapped brother (Michael Lewis) without a steady wage. Charlotte (Mary-Louise Parker) and Eddie (Kevin J. O'Connor) must wrestle with their relationship, since one or both of them may need to leave town to find better work. Although the loss of the company is difficult, all the town's residents manage to find hope and strength.
