1976

Silent Movie is a comedy about a film director who decides to make a silent film for his next project despite the fact that they have been out of fashion for decades. Mel Funn (Mel Brooks) was once the toast of Hollywood, but a drinking problem has driven his career off the rails. Desperate to get back into the game, he proposes a wild idea to the head of Big Picture Studios, Chief (Sid Caesar): that he will make a silent movie. After Funn assures Chief that he will get all of Hollywood's biggest stars to appear in the film, Chief agrees to fund the picture. Funn then goes out to secure the top talent in the business, including actors such as Burt Reynolds, James Caan and Liza Minnelli -- all of whom play themselves. Will Funn's film succeed or will it fail so spectacularly that Big Picture Studios will collapse in the process?
