PG-13
Simply Irresistible is the 1999 magical romantic comedy starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, and is now available on Amazon.com. Gellar plays Amanda Shelton, a beautiful New York City restaurant owner who's business, and love life, is failing until she brews up some magic in the kitchen. Amanda took over her mother's restaurant after she died, but her culinary skills are lacking. However, after purchasing a magical crab and meeting handsome department store executive Tom Bartlett (Sean Patrick Flanery), Amanda discovers she has powers to inspire love though her cooking. Before she knows it, her restaurant is packed with newly loyal customers, and the man of her dreams is head over heals for her, despite being attached to wretched girlfriend Chris (Amanda Peet). Her world becomes truly magical, but soon proves more than she can handle. Amanda must live up to her mother's memory while winning over the man she loves, the natural way.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

The New York Times Lawrence Van Gelder

It is a measure of the shortcomings of this genial, well-meaning but ultimately unenchanting film that scene after scene is stolen by the second bananas.

  • 20

    Los Angeles Times John Anderson

The two leads are unappealing, the story is dragged on for days and the rather random magical element renders any human factor irrelevant..

  • 20

    Variety Joe Leydon

Much like a botched souffle that fails to rise, Simply Irresistible is a bland confection that remains doggedly earthbound while attempting flights of romantic fantasy.
