    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • John Huston had a bitter quarrel with executive producer Walter Mirisch after completing the film, claiming that Mirisch had not only re-edited the film but added a prologue sequence. He told one interviewer, "I was properly bitched." Mirisch, in turn, claimed that previews of the film had been a disaster and that Huston was unreasonable in not making alterations to the film. It has since become one of the hardest of all Huston films to see.

      • Although this film is set entirely in Scotland, it was almost entirely filmed in Ireland, near the home of director John Huston in County Galway. Furthermore, a great many of the Scottish characters are played by obviously Irish actors, many of whom make little effort to disguise their native accents.

    • NOTES (1)

      • This film is very loosely based on a true story. David Haggart was hanged as a highwayman in 1821, and devoted the last twenty-one days of his life to composing his autobiography in his prison cell in Edinburgh. Published posthumously, the book was a minor literary curiosity for a number of years. There is no reason to suppose that the 21-year-old Haggart actually escaped the gallows as this film outrageously suggests.
