Sleeping with the Enemy is the 1991 psychological thriller from master director Joseph Ruben (The Stepfather, The Good Son, The Forgotten) and acclaimed screenwriter (Ronald Bass, Rain Man). Laura Burney (Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman, Erin Brokovich) seemingly has it all: house on the beach, no kids, a wonderful and loving husband ' but nothing is as it seems. Her husband Martin (Patrick Bergin, Patriot Games, Eye of the Beholder) is a monster who beats poor Laura at the slightest infraction of the house rules he has established for their relationship. Unable to take it anymore, Laura sets a plan in motion where she'll disappear forever one night and set up a new life elsewhere. She agrees to accompany Martin and a neighbor sailing on the ocean and pretends to drown from an inability to swim. The ruse succeeds and Laura manages to get away and set up a new idyllic life in rural America. Everything seems turning for the better ' until Martin figures out he's been had and vows to get his hands on his beloved wife again.moreless
