Sleepwalking is a family drama about Tara (AnnaSophia Robb), a 12-year-old girl who copes with the abandonment of her mother. Tara's mother, Joleen (Charlize Theron), can't seem to get her life together. Joleen's boyfriend has recently been arrested for illegally growing marijuana, and instead of focusing on creating a stable living environment for her daughter, Joleen places Tara in foster care. Joleen's brother James (Nick Stahl), who isn't quite stable mentally, feels sympathetic toward his niece and decides to kidnap Tara from the foster care home. James and his newly freed niece set out on the open road together, although they have no plan or anyplace to go. After dead ends and turnarounds James and Tara find themselves at James' father's farm. As James copes with the past of his violent childhood, he realizes that to break the vicious cycle of dysfunction that his family has fallen into he must finally face the demons of his past. Tara begins to understand why her missing mother has lived such a tumultuous life. James prepares for the confrontation that could bring his family closer together than ever before, if it doesn't destroy them first.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

Terrific performances and a bleak, riveting look at life on the economic fringes eventually gives way to an overly familiar tale of abuse, denial and catharsis that feels like warm...

  • 50

    Variety Ronnie Scheib

The overly simplistic script by Zac Stanford ("The Chumscrubber") hits nothing but high notes, making the whole dramatically less than the sum of its parts.

The New York Times Stephen Holden

As Mr. Maher, in his feature directing debut, brings in surreal touches and puts on literary airs, the film's grip loosens, and its vernacular turns increasingly wooden.
