Sleepy Hollow turns this classic storybook tale into a more mature and realistic movie. Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) must find out who is cutting off the heads of people in a small town, not knowing that this town also holds a secret. The town is convinced that the ghost of a murdered English Soldier, also known as the Headless Horseman, is to blame. After investigating the strange resting place of the Horseman, Ichabod realizes that the head has been removed from the rest of the remains, but is still not certain that a ghost is responsible for the murders. Ichabod and his love interest, Katrina (Christina Ricci) decide to investigate who is behind the murders and in the process, they start to believe that the ghost of the Headless Horseman really does exist. If the Horseman is back from the dead, what does he want and how are they going to stop him?

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Variety Todd McCarthy

An entertainingly eccentric horror tale that envelopes the audience in a dreamy and bloody nightmare.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

More creepy and flesh-crawling than overwhelmingly gory, it nevertheless takes pride in characters who get splattered with blood as often as take-out fries get doused with catsup.

  • 60

    The New York Times

Turns the tale of the Headless Horseman into the pre-tabloid story of a rampaging serial killer.
