Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 romantic drama directed by Danny Boyle. It is the winner of Best Picture at the 2009 Academy Awards. Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a contestant on the Indian version of the game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, and only one question remains before he will win 20 million rupees. Since Jamal is only an uneducated peasant from a Mumbai slum, the game show officials suspect that he is cheating. They interrogate Jamal, forcing him to prove how he knows the answer to each question on the show. Through a series of flashbacks, Jamal shows how his hard life growing up on the streets with his brother Salim (Madhur Mittal) and friend Latika (Freida Pinto) has helped him have the knowledge that he needs to win the game. As Jamal's tale unfolds, it becomes more clear that Jamal has no desire for money or glory and has a unique motive for being on the show.moreless
