Smith! is a 1969 dramatic western directed by Michael O'Herlihy and written by Louis Pelletier. It is based on the novel titled 'Breaking Smith's Quarter Horse' by Paul St. Pierre. Smith (Glenn Ford) owns and operates a ranch teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. His own procrastination and easily distracted ways often get in the way of efficient operation. Smith's life is thrown into chaos when a young Indian shows up on his door looking for help. Jimmyboy (Frank Ram''rez) is falsely accused of murdering a white man. Instead of facing a trial in a corrupt and biased court, he seeks refuge on Smith's ranch. Jimmyboy goes to Smith because he is well respected by local Indians. As an orphan, he was raised by an Indian man (Chief Dan George). Jimmyboy is afraid that the white population plans vigilante justice with the support of the local sheriff (James Westerfield). Smith convinces Jimmyboy to turn himself in with the promises that the case will be brought to trial, and he will testify on Jimmyboy's behalf.moreless
