Smoky is a 1946 western directed by Louis King. When ex-convict Clint Barkley (Fred MacMurray) sees a black stallion racing across Utah's backcountry, he captures the horse and takes it to the nearby Rocking R. Ranch. Julie Richards (Anne Baxter), the owner of the ranch, is grateful that he caught the wild steed for her, so she offers him the job of horse wrangler. Clint names the black stallion Smoky and works to break the horse for Julie. Clint begins to feel a close connection to Smoky as he works with him, and he also begins a romance with beautiful Julie. Unfortunately, Clint's greedy brother Frank (Bruce Cabot) decides to walk back into his life and gets a job on the ranch. After the brothers have a fight due to Frank's criminal activities, Frank decides to steal Smoky and flee from the ranch. When Clint discovers that Smoky is gone, he goes on an epic journey to find the stallion.
