Rating:
PG-13

Snow Falling on Cedars is a dramatic film directed by Scott Hicks based on David Guterson’s novel of the same name that centers on the island of San Piedro in Washington state in 1951 in the hunt for the truth behind a murder case involving a Japanese-American farmer, Kazuo Miyamoto (Rick Yune) and a Caucasian fisherman, Carl Heine Jr. (Eric Thal). Despite Kazuo’s illustrious war history fighting for America, he was treated with mistrust and most of his pre-war deals were reneged. When the town’s one-man newspaper writer Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), a World War II disabled veteran, delves into the anti-Japanese sentiments of the small island, he discovers just how far those sentiments go, including the town’s sheriff (Richard Jenkins), prosecutor (James Rebhorn), and the victim’s mother, Etta Heine (Celia Weston). As Ishmael learns of just what happened, he not only discovers how quick people are to hate but also how difficult unrequited love is when he falls in love with Kazuo's wife, Hatsue (Youki Kudoh).
