Movie Summary

Director:
Michael Hoffman
Released:
1991
Rating:
PG-13
Soapdish is a 1991 romantic comedy film by director Michael Hoffman, starring Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Shue, Whoopi Goldberg, Teri Hatcher, Cathy Moriarty, Gary Marshall, Kathy Najimy, and Carrie Fischer. The movie is the fictional backstage story of the cast and crew of a popular fictional television soap opera. Sally Field is Celeste Talbert, an aging soap star whose role is threatened by a younger co-star. Celeste is just as dramatic as her character on the show, and will not allow herself to be pushed out of the spotlight by some promiscuous little girl, at least not if there is anything she can do about it! If you think soap operas are dramatic, Soapdish goes to show that you do not even know the half of it. Unplanned pregnancies, casting couches, back stabbing, and counterproductive ambitions abound in Soapdish. Soapdish was nominated for a 1992 Golden Globe Award.

If it doesn't work, it fails spectacularly, but it does work, and it succeeds in making its plot clear even though the basic story device is unending confusion.

Soapdish runs on longer than necessary, and not every scene is as funny as one would like, but it's funny enough to recommend. [31 May 1991, p.C]
