Soldier is a 1998 science-fiction film about an aging warrior torn between his upbringing and his conscience. In the future, Project Adam supplies the perfect soldiers for our military. Selected at birth, soldiers are raised by the government to become strong, fearless, efficient and obedient. By age 38, Todd (Kurt Russell) and his men have seen many battles without a glimpse of a normal life. Their world changes when Colonel Mekum (Jason Isaacs), introduces them to their replacements, genetically engineered soldiers with super-human physiques and no emotion. After a "test" of the new soldiers results in the apparent deaths of Todd and two of his men, the "old" soldiers are demoted to second-class status. Unbeknownst to the military, Todd survives the test and seeks refuge in by a peaceful village where he must live as a civilian for the first time in his life. It is not long, however, before Colonel Mekum sends his new soldiers on a training exercise to destroy the village and everyone living in it.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Somehow, against considerable obstacles, it has captured something true about families and friendship, creating a texture of believable emotions on screen.

  • 70

    Variety Emanuel Levy

The filmmakers give new saga a freer, looser form than is usual, allowing a superlative ensemble to develop rich characterizations.

  • 50

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

In fact even the film's most dramatic moments are presented with decorousness bordering on detachment.
