Solomon and Sheba is a 1959 film directed by King Vidor, whose final feature film it was. Starring Yul Brynner, Gina Lollobrigida, George Sanders, and Marisa Pavan, this biblical epic describes the rivalry between the wise Prince Solomon and his war-loving older brother Adonijah, and the plot hatched by the Queen of Sheba with the Pharaoh of Egypt to overthrow him when it is Solomon, not the older Adonijah, who succeeds their father David on the throne of Israel. Tyrone Power was acting in this film at the time of his sudden death in 1958; Yul Brynner was his replacement.

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • This was the last feature film to be directed by the legendary veteran King Vidor, although he was only 65 years old at the time of its release, and lived until 1982. He was very dismissive of the film in later years, claiming that "you don't mind doing a Solomon And Sheba every once in a while, but you don't want to do two in a row like that."

    • Tyrone Power was originally cast as King Solomon, and filmed in the role for many weeks. A sudden heart attack killed the famous star at only 45 years of age, and with the film only half-finished; it became necessary to re-film all of his scenes with a new actor, Yul Brynner. Director King Vidor found Brynner far more difficult to direct than Power and later claimed that it had become "a nothing sort of picture" as a result.
