Somers Town is the 2008 black and white British drama about two friends from opposite sides of the track who fall in love with the same girl. Tomo (Thomas Turgoose) is a runaway from Nottingham who is used to making his way through life one day at a time, living off of whatever he can scrape together. Marek (Piotr Jagiello) is a Polish immigrant, the son of a blue-collar father who is making an honest living for the family. Marek offers to take the homeless Tomo in. The two become fast friends, and they work together and whatever jobs they can in order to make a living. However, when Maria (Ireneusz Czop) appears on the scene, the two boys realize that all is fair in love and war. Maria is a French waitress with whom they both immediately fall in love. When Marek's father realizes what has been going on under his own roof, their relationship and their dreams for the future all come to a crashing halt.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times

A funny and endearing character comedy whose extra-brief, 70-minute running time proves perfectly adequate for its slender, episodic story.

  • 70

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

An agreeable if slight, vaguely sketched character study times two.

  • 70

    Variety

Basically a comedy but with typically Meadowsian dark edges, it forms an affectionate tribute to cross-cultural friendship and the rapidly changing landscape known as Somers Town.
