Movie Summary

Somersault is a 2004 Australian film written and directed by Cate Shortland and starring Abbie Cornish as Heidi, a sixteen-year-old on a quest of self-discovery as she learns through trial-and-error the differences between sexual contact and love. Heidi has emerged from the innocence of youth with an enthusiastic need for human contact. As pure as her intentions may be, her eagerness to explore her sexuality lands her in some troubling places. Heidi becomes overwhelmed with guilt after successfully seducing her mother's boyfriend. The young girl takes off to live on her own in a ski town in New South Wales. She meets Joe (Sam Worthington), a handsome young man whose own questions about his sexual identity leave him incapable of offering Heidi the emotional connection she wants so badly. This film was well received internationally and earned over twenty major awards at international film festivals. Somersault is a charming coming-of-age tale that offers a compassionate look at one young woman's efforts to find love in a sea of lovers who are just as confused as her.moreless
