Son of Man is a powerful drama film made in 2005 that recaptures and retells the story of the life of Jesus Christ, set in South Africa. Born from a virgin named Mary (Pauline Malefane) after an angel visits her, Jesus (Andile Kosi) begins his life in Judea in a world full of corrupt politics, brutal civil war and poverty. As he grows into his own as an adult, Jesus sets forth on a journey to teach the world a new belief in love, compassion and peace, and surrounds himself with a handful of trustworthy disciples. With the government enforcing the laws of the land on everyone through military occupation, and carefully watching everyone in opposition, Jesus' faith and conviction are tested. Son of Man was the first South African movie to make its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006, and received the Veto-Jury prize at the Afrika Filmfestival in 2007.
