Sons and Lovers is a film adapted from the original novel of the same name by acclaimed author D.H. Lawrence. Nominated for several academy awards including Best Picture and Best Director and the winner for Best Cinematography, Sons and Lovers was an instant classic. Adapted for the screen by T.E.B. Clark and Gavin Lambert and released in 1960, the film follows the Morel family, a lower-income mining family. Gertrude Morel (Wendy Hiller) was the refined daughter of a "good old burgher family". She forsakes her wealthy upbringing to marry the poor miner Walter Morel (Trevor Howard). The burden of poverty begins to weigh heavily on Gertrude and she then devotes her life to her sons. Sons and Lovers is the story of the love and devotion that Gertrude and her sons have for each other and how these ties have the power to affect one's entire life. Mary Ure was also nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Clara Dawes in this evocative and transfixing classic.moreless
