Sophie's Choice is a heart wrenching film about the struggles of a married couple living in New York City after World War II and their dark and secretive past that haunts them. The film was released in 1982 and stars Meryl Streep as Sophie, a character burdened by a decision she was forced to make during the war. The film follows Sophie's troubled and abusive relationship with her husband Nathan (Kevin Klein). A young writer and interloper named Stingo (Peter McNichol) moves into their boarding house and is entranced with Sophie. He quickly despises Nathan for the way he treates Sophie and Stingo finds himself falling in love with the delicate, broken English speaking Sophie. Without ever really having to say too many words, the film unravels Sophie's horrifying wartime experience with the Nazi party. Her growing relationship with Stingo reveals that she is a mother, one that lives in shame from the hardest decision a mother could have ever had to of made ' to choose which of her two children she would keep with her and which she would send away with the Nazi's and ultimately to death. Meryl Streep's performance was so riveting that she received the Academy Award for best actress that year. The film itself received five total nominations with that being the only win.moreless

  • 90

The New York Times Janet Maslin

Thanks in large part to Miss Streep's bravura performance, it's a film that casts a powerful, uninterrupted spell.

  • 60

    Variety

Sophie's Choice is a handsome, doggedly faithful and astoundingly tedious adaptation of William Styron's best-seller.
