South of Pico, written and directed by Ernst Gossner, opens with four strangers witnessing a horrific accident. Working backwards, the film traces the story of each character's journey through the day and how they all end up converging in a residential neighborhood south of Pico Boulevard. Robert (Kip Pardue) drives a cheating bride to her wedding, and their encounter makes him come to a realization about his own failed relationship. Desperate for his absentee father's affection, teenage Patrick (Soren Fulton) races through the bad part of town on the way to their meeting. Carla (Gina Torres) is a lonely waitress who finally begins to let down her guard when a friendly patron pursues her friendship. Dr. Walter Chambers (Henry Simmons) treats a dying boy while the possibility of receiving a much-needed research grant looms over his head. All of their stories converge upon one horrible moment near Pico Boulevard, a sprawling thoroughfare separating the poor from the rich.
