Spark (1998) that examines the dynamics of a troubled African-American couple stranded in hostile territory. The 1998 release of the film is an expanded version of director Garret Williams' original 1996 short film of the same name. Byron (Terrence Howard) and Nina (Nicole Air Parker), a pair of young lovers whose relationship is stretched to the breaking point, are driving from Chicago to Los Angeles. A collision with a stray dog causes their BMW to break down on a California desert road. The two get a tow from Mooney (Brendan Sexton III) to a white trash town in which their car is repaired, only to die again. Byron and Nina decide to spend the night in a motel. Byron spends a little more time with Mooney, who begins to reveal his unsavory true colors. Mooney's betrayal combines with the ample racial tension of the town to send Byron into a rage, with shocking results.
