Sparkle is a 1976 musical drama directed by Sam O'Steen. In the late 1950s, three sisters are coming of age in Harlem. Dramatic, high-spirited Sister (Lonette McKee), observant Dolores (Dwan Smith) and good-natured Sparkle (Irene Cara) are all aspiring singers. They start out singing in the church choir, but their friend Stix (Philip Michael Thomas), a budding songwriter, has bigger and better plans in store for them. Together with a fifth choir member, Levi (Dorian Harewood), the five Harlem teenagers start a quintet and soon start gaining attention in local competitions. Sister is a vibrant singer, outshining the others. It seems like the Hearts will go far together, but when Levi drops out, Sister arranges an all-girl group called Sister & the Sisters. Now truly on their way to fame and fortune, the group keeps meeting obstacles along the way. Sister's abusive relationship with a gangster (Tony King) and Dolores' jealousy and anger start to drive wedges between the siblings. It is up to Sparkle to stay true to her dream and find her own voice.moreless
