Speaking Freely: Vol. 1: John Perkins is a documentary where a former "economic hit man" is interviewed about his role in the worldwide economy. Perkins convinced many third-world countries to take on sizeable debt to build large public works projects. These contracts lined the pockets of huge American corporations and left the countries owing money they could not repay. This also led to social upheaval and political unrest in these countries. Perkins eventually grew disgusted with what he saw happening all around him and left his position in 1981. Realizing his actions had a negative effect on the world, he vowed to start making the world a better place. He founded a non-profit organization, Dream Change Coalition, which works closely with native peoples to preserve their cultures and environments. A truly interesting take on worldwide economics and politics, Speaking Freely delivers a unique view from someone who knows the inner workings of the dynamics of the third world nations and the struggles that are laid upon them by greedy corporations.moreless
