Special is a 2006 fantasy drama from writer-directors Hal Haberman and Jeremy Passmore. Les Franken (Michael Rapaport) is a depressed, socially awkward meter cop who spends his days writing parking citations in Los Angeles. His only friends are Joey (Josh Peck) and Everett (Robert Baker), the owners of his favourite comic book store. One day, Les decides to enroll in a clinical trial for a new experimental antidepressant, Specioprin Hydrochloride. The drug, designed to inhibit feelings of self-doubt, causes Les to start having psychotic delusions, and he believes that he has super-powers. Dr. Dobson (Jack Kehler) wants to administer an antidote, but Les doesn't want to give up his 'super-powers.' Against the advice of his doctor and friends, Les quits his job, dresses up as a superhero and attempts to use his 'super-powers' to fight crime in the city. Eventually, the financial backers behind the pharmaceutical company responsible for the drug, Jonas Exiler (Paul Blackthorne) and Ted Exiler (Ian Bohen), set out to kill Les.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

New York Daily News Elizabeth Weitzman

The movie loses its way toward the end, shifting from wry black comedy to slightly overdone pathos. But there's plenty here to appreciate, making the title perfectly apt.

  • 58

    Entertainment Weekly

Thanks to Rapaport's brio in embracing the hero's drug-induced delusions, the movie is less a failure than a noble experiment gone awry.

The New York Times Nathan Lee

Either way, it doesn't quite go far enough as psychological study or cultural commentary.
