Speed Racer: The Movie is a 2008 film based on the popular Japanese anime series from the 1960s. While the original series was animated, Speed Racer: The Movie was shot in live-action by directors Larry and Andy Wachowski. It starred Emile Hirsch as the title character along with Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon and Matthew Fox. In the film, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is trying to win the prestigious cross-country car race that claimed the life of his brother, Rex Racer (Scott Porter). He learns that the evil Royalton corporation is fixing races so he works with his mother (Susan Sarandon), father (John Goodman) and girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci) to foil Royalton's nefarious attempts. Along the way, he is aided by the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox), whom Speed suspects may actually be his brother. Released on May 9, 2008, Speed Racer: The Movie proved to be a failure at the box office, earning only 94 million dollars on a budget of 120 million dollars.moreless
