Spetters is the acclaimed 1980 drama romance from future controversial blockbuster director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Totall Recall, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers, Showgirls). The story centers around three friends who each have a dream of a better life. Two of the boys come from loving families that support their efforts to improve their lives through motorbike racing. One young man, who is fighting off his growing attraction to other men, comes from an unloving strict religious family. His father delights in pointing out his shortcomings and punishing him with a beating for every infraction. The boys worship the big named racer Gerrit Witkamp (Rutger Hauer), with leader Rein thinking he will be the next big named rider. Things are looking up for the boys when a wildly pretty gal, new to town selling concessions with her brother at the bike races, with few scruples enters their lives and turns everything upside down. She is hoping to hook up with one of them and put some stability in her life. Life rapidly goes downhill when the talented Rein is permanently disabled as a result of a stupid accident on the highway caused by orange peels tossed from a car window.moreless
