Sphinx is the 1981 mystery thriller which harkens back to the ethos of the Hitchcock films. The beautiful Erica Baron (Lesley-Anne Down) is an Egyptologist and archaeologist who gets caught up in black market of rare artifacts. Erica manages to get her hands on a prize that she isn't meant to have, because it belongs to a local sect which has hidden it away. The sect is afraid that too much of their country's heritage has been stolen away by foreigners, and now they will do anything to stop her from taking it. She finds herself stuck in horrible circumstances: she is trapped in a tomb, chased by bats, and surrounded by mummified corpses. Her only friends are at best ambiguous allies, including a sometime love interest, Akmed Khazzan (Frank Langella), and a friend who cannot always be trusted, Yvon Mageot (Maurice Ronet). The adventure may leave Erica rich, or she may disappear into the desert like so many of the treasures she's studied.moreless
