Spies is a 1928 thriller from famed German film director Fritz Lang. Despite being from the silent era, it has a contemporary feel due to the large amounts of sexual intrigue and sophisticated gadgetry that fuels the plot. The criminal mastermind Haghi (Rudolf Kleine - Rogge), heads a spy organization that continually manages to elude police crackdowns and government secret service agents. Agent 326 (Willy Fritsch) infiltrates Haghi's organization disguised as a tramp, but Haghi discovers his true identity. Haghi attempts to use Sonya (Gerda Maurus) to compromise the agent, but she instead falls in love with 326. Haghi tries to get his hand on a copy of a secret Japanese treaty being held by the diabolical Doctor Masimoto (Lupe Pick). While doing this, Haghi must keep monitoring the dangerous romance developing between Sonya and Agent 326. The film has a running time of nearly three hours, but the fast pace makes it seem shorter.
