Splinter is a chilling 2006 psychological thriller that follows an amnesiac as he desperately attempts to recall events from his past in order to save his future. The film was written and directed by Michael D. Olmos. A Los Angeles gangster named Dreamer (Enrique Almeida) awakes in the hospital after an indescribable amount of time. As he slowly regains consciousness, he remembers his brother was killed the night before in a gang fight. After leaving the hospital, he sets out avenge his brother's death. He comes across a rookie cop Detective Graham (Resmine Atis) and his sidekick, veteran Detective Cunningham (Tom Sizemore) who are investigating the murders of some of Dreamer's gang members. An all-out war between rivaling gangs is imminent. Splinter was so realistic in its portrayal of LA gang life, it was only shown in cinemas for a brief period because of its aggressive content. Two thumbs up!

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Variety

A spare, effective and genuinely frightening retro-nightmare.

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times

A fan of flash-edited, orientation-challenged, hand-held camera mayhem, Wilkins unfortunately takes the wrong cue from his title and fragments the movie's attack scenes for maximum...

  • 50

The New York Times A.O. Scott

A diverting if not terribly original on-the-cheap horror film.
