The Spook Who Sat By the Door is a 1973 American film directed by Ivan Dixon and starring Lawrence Cook, Janet League, and Paula Kelly. In the early 1970's the CIA was required by law to recruit African-Americans for training. Dan Freeman (Cook) successfully completes the training and becomes one of the first African Americans in the agency. Unbeknownst to the agency, Freeman is a black nationalist. He is hired as a Top Secret Reproduction Center Sections Chief, and stays at the agency long enough to not arouse suspicion. When he leaves the job, he begins recruiting men in inner city Chicago to become "Freedom Fighters," teaching them the advanced combat techniques he acquired in the CIA. They begin their crusade for African American freedom by enacting violence throughout the city. The National Guard is sent in to stop the fighters, but will they be able to stop them in time?
