St. Louis Blues is a biopic film about musical composer W.C. Handy, and his rocky road to national acclaim. W.C. Handy's (Nat 'King' Cole) life is shown in this 1958 film, featuring the story of how the composer got into music, as well as the troubles he faced along the way. St. Louis Blues features performances and acting by some of the most prominent singers and musicians at the time. Handy grew up at home under the supervision of his father, Reverend Charles Handy (Juano Hernandez), who demands that he only use his musical talents at church. However, at a young age W.C. Handy took musical inspiration from the streets and its workers, getting a push to further his musical aspirations from local speakeasy singer, Gogo Germaine (Eartha Kitt). This causes a rift to form between W.C. and his father, causing them to be estranged for many years. St. Louis Blues shows the genius as well as torment of W.C. Handy, his inspiration to compose brilliant works, and the mental anguish that causes him to almost lose it all.moreless
