PG-13
Stanley & Iris is a romantic drama film directed by Martin Ritt based on Pat Barker's novel, Union Street, which follows the unlikely relationship of a still-grieving young widow and an illiterate young cook. Iris (Jane Fonda) is barely able to support her two kids, Kelly and Richard, after her husband's death. With the stress of living in a problematic neighborhood, the potential threat of her abusive brother-in-law, and the added problem of Kelly's unexpected teen pregnancy, Iris finds a bit of a relief in the form of Stanley (Robert De Niro), a helpful cook working in the same bakery. Though she finds him endearing, when she discovers he cannot read and is struggling to keep his elderly father alive, Iris sets out to teach Stanley how far he can go with learning to read and to seek out his dreams just as he teaches her anything is possible.
