When Praxis, a Klingon moon, is destroyed and the Klingon homeworld's ozone layer depleted by the shockwave, the Klingons seek a truce with the United Federation of Planets. The USS Enterprise is sent to escort the Klingon Ambassador, Gorkon, to Earth for negotiations. When Gorkon's ship is fired upon and Gorkon murdered, Captain James T. Kirk and Doctor Leonard McCoy are accused of the crime and sentenced to hard labor in the Rura Penthe mines. The two are soon rescued by Mr. Spock, who has discovered the true cause of Gorkon's death. When the crew of the Enterprise uncover a plot to further sabotage negotiations with the Klingons, they must find a way to prevent the conflict and ensure this step toward peace.
