    Variety

A magnificent film. George Lucas set out to make the biggest possible adventure fantasy out of his memories of serials and older action epics, and he succeeded brilliantly.

  • Film was probably the best ever made

Star Wars was probably the best movie ever made. It was a great popcorn movie with groundbreaking special effects and a moving and mystical coming-of-age story. For other generations there were perhaps more significant films, but for my generation it was the life-changing, genre-making epic of epics. It simply has no equal.

    • Leia: Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

    • Obi-Wan: The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us... it binds the galaxy together.

    • General Motti: The station is now the ultimate power in the universe. I suggest we use it.
Vader: Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force.
General Motti: Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader. Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels hidden fortress--
Vader: (Vader's thumb and index finger start to close and Motti starts to choke) I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Tarkin: Enough of this. Vader, release him.
      Vader: As you wish.

    • Obi-Wan: (at Mos Eisley Spaceport) You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

    • Stormtrooper: Let me see your identification.
Obi-Wan: You don't need to see his identification.
Stormtrooper: We don't need to see his identification.
Obi-Wan: These aren't the droids you are looking for.
Stormtrooper: These aren't the droids we're looking for.
Obi-Wan: He can go about his business.
Stormtrooper: You can go about you're business.
      Obi-Wan: Move along.
      Stormtrooper: Move along. Move along.

    • Obi-Wan: The Force can have a strong influence on the weak minded.

    • Leia: I should have expected to find you holding Vader's leash. I recognized your foul stench when I was brought aboard.
      Tarkin: Charming to the last.

    • Leia: Listen... I don't know who you are or where you came from... but from now on, you do as I tell you, O.K.?
Han: Look, your worshipfulness let's get one thing straight. I take orders from just one person--me.
Leia: Mmm, it's a wonder you're still alive.

    • Leia: (regarding Chewie) Will someone please get this big walking carpet out of my way?

    • Vader: I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now, I am the master.
Obi-Wan: Only a master of evil, Darth.
Vader: (sabre battle ensues) Your powers are weak old man.
Obi-Wan: You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

    • Han: (Luke has just destroyed the Death Star with a direct hit) Great shot kid. That was one in a million.
