Stardom tells the story of Canadian Tina Menzhal's (Jessica Pare) journey from teen hockey player to international supermodel. In the film, director Denys Arcand skewers contemporary celebrity culture by examining the meteoric rise of Menzhal. Her rapid ascent is depicted by the intersplicing of fake talk shows, local and international news programs, documentary footage, rock videos, and fashion travelogues. Arcand gives the sense of how one name or face can be omnipresent in the media one moment and then gone in the next. The film follows Tina as she travels the world, appears on innumerable fashion runways, and falls in and out of love. However, due to the skillful manipulation of her agent, the audience never really gets a sense of who Tina is or what she wants. Stardom is a skillful dissection of image and celebrity that still manages to tell a compelling and sympathetic story about a girl plucked from obscurity and thrust into stardom.
