Steal This Movie! is a biographical film about the life of political agitator Abbie Hoffman. To avoid going to jail after being arrested for trying to sell cocaine to an undercover policeman, Abbie Hoffman (Vincent D'Onofrio) goes into hiding. After five years of being underground, Hoffman contacts a reporter, Stew Albert (Donal Logue), in an effort to tell his story. Skeptical that he is in contact with the "real" Abbie Hoffman, Albert begins conducting interviews with those close to Hoffman: his wife, Anita (Janeane Garofalo); his lawyer, Gerry Lefcourt (Kevin Pollak); and his close friend, Jerry Rubin (Kevin Corrigan). Throughout these interviews a picture emerges of Hoffman as one of the true rabble-rousers of the 1960s counter-culture movement. Though Hoffman appreciates Albert's efforts to tell the story of his past exploits, he also decides that he is ready to cast aside his alias of "Barry Freed" and re-enter society. With a jail sentence looming, however, the choice is a difficult one.
