Movie Summary

Director:
Katsuhiro Otomo
Released:
2005
Rating:
PG-13
Steamboy is an animated steampunk science fiction directed by Kasuhiro Otomo that follows the thirteen-year-old James Ray Steam, a brilliant and idealistic inventor, whose grandfather and father sent him their powerful invention called the Steamball, a strange metal ball contained with a steam-based energy that could reform the entire nation. As Ray works hard to use this new device for the greater good, he has to save London from destruction as the Ohara Foundation sends out their best minions to gain control of the powerful energy source. Notable for the length of its creation and its price, Steamboy is also well known for its use of the steampunk subgenre, taking place in the 19th century Victorian era where technology is steam-based, including the Steam Castle, a giant flying military fortress, and construction claws. Steamboy features the voices of Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart, Alfred Molina, and Kari Wahlgren.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Janet Maslin

The film turns into a preposterous but engrossing spectacle, fueled by a resource more enduring than steam or its successors: big ideas.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

A stunning-to-look-at film marred by a less than searing pace and some narrative incoherence.

  • 60

    Variety

Dry storytelling and boy's-toys mechanics will stop this from being the next "Spirited Away"-style crossover hit.
