Steel Magnolias is a 1989 drama directed by Herbert Ross. The film is set in a small parish in present day Louisiana. In the film, a group of women regularly meet at Truvy's Beauty Parlor to bond and support each other. The ladies include, M'Lynn Eatenton (Sally Fields), her daughter, Shelby Eatenton Latcherie (Julia Roberts), Truvy Jones (Dolly Parton), owner of the salon, Ousier Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine), Claire Belcher (Olympia Dukkais) and Annelle Dupuy (Daryl Hannah). The women's most recent conversation topic is Shelby's recent marriage and pregnancy. Shelby has diabetes and her mother fears her pregnancy will cause great harm to her unborn child or herself. The film follows Shelby throughout her pregnancy and the women support Shelby and her mother through the difficult experience. The film shares the joys and sadness that coincide with a difficult pregnancy. The women prove that through ups and downs the one thing that stays the same is their commitment to their friendship.
