Stella Dallas is a 1937 romantic drama directed by King Vidor that tells the story of a woman coming from a working class family, struggling to adapt to the expectations of the high society. Stella Martin (Barbara Stanwyck) is a rural girl whose goal is to improve her social status by marrying Stephen Dallas (John Boles), a wealthy executive with high social standards and exquisite taste. Stella tries hard to integrate herself in Stephen's social environment and to become a true lady, but she never seems to be close to accomplishing this task as long as she maintains her friendship with brutal Ed Munn (Alan Hale). She realizes that she will probably never change, but she wants her daughter, Laurel (Anne Shirley), to become the refined woman her mother will never be. Tired of his wife's failures, Stephen seizes the opportunity to leave her when he is offered a promotion that requires him to move to New York. Laurel soon realizes that her social life would be much better if her mother would stay out of it.moreless
