Stir of Echoes is a 1999 supernatural mystery thriller based on the novel by Richard Matheson. After being hypnotized at a party by his quirky sister-in-law Lisa (Illeana Douglas), Chicago resident Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) finds himself suddenly experiencing psychic flashes and visions of supernatural entities. Lisa wakes him with the post-hypnotic suggestion to 'be more open-minded', and afterwards Tom begins encountering haunting visions of a ghostly girl, hinting at unsolved mysteries, violent acts and dark secrets. As Tom struggles to comprehend the nature of his emerging psychic abilities, he is driven to the brink of madness and close to alienating his lovely wife Maggie (Kathryn Erbe) while his young son Jake (Zachary Cope), seems to understand the nature of Tom's experiences uncannily well. As Tom begins to unravel the mystery behind the supernatural visitations, he unearths a dark mystery and conspiracy whose revelation may come to threaten him and his family.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times

What gives the movie its teeth is the very earthy Witzky family, who behave so much like real people you might think they are.

Koepp does a masterful job of grounding his intimations of the supernatural in a totally persuasive down-to-earth context.

  • 60

    The New York Times

Another thriller that packs a spooky wallop as it conjures an unseen world within reach.
